Even until very recently it is often that people experience “Kandu-Mathi Elhun” in our country. Because we inhabit in tiny islands surrounded by the waters and for centuries we have traveled and fished in these sea’s, it is likely that our ancestors will have a taboo explanation for it. But whats surprising is that from those times to even until today the story of “Kandu-Mathi Elhun” have been the same.
They describe the event as a cause of the devil. The dhoani would be surrounded by a group of fluorescent green glowing lights in the sea. They believe it’s the first sign of danger. The brighter the lights glow the closer they are being at risk. So the dhoani tries to move further and further away from the lights eventually going around in circles until it looses it’s direction. Then follows a series of unconditional salt water rain and sightings of corpses and tombstones floating by the water. Which I believe can be just hallucinations which is natural to occur when people are extremely frightened.
Having personally experienced this phenomenon on my trip. I found it very interesting and did some further research to see what “actually” is happening.
“What we experience is called “Milky seas”. It is a condition on the open ocean where large areas of seawater are filled with bio-luminescent bacteria, causing the ocean to glow an eerie blue at night. The condition has been present in mariner’s tales for centuries. But even until recently it has not been rigorously documented. There have been 235 documented sightings of milky seas since 1915 - mostly in the north-western Indian Ocean and near Indonesia.”
